A high-quality printer is an essential piece of equipment for my family’s homeschool. In addition to documents I need around the house and miscellaneous things we print like receipts, we print several school-related documents each week.
When we began looking for a new printer several months ago, I realized that many things had changed in the decade or so that had passed since I’d last purchased a printer. There were numerous things for us to consider. The first was whether we wanted a laser or inkjet printer.
I did some research on the differences between the two. I’ve placed the key information I found into a handy table.
Which type of printer is best for you depends on what you print and how often you print. Furthermore, individual printers within each category vary in quality depending on their design and features. You will want to read the specifications and carefully consider the reviews on any printer that interests you.
We ended up purchasing two printers: a low-cost laser printer for black and white printing and an inkjet for color printing. I’m frugal, so I didn’t want to purchase two, but we believed this would work best for us. Thankfully, it has worked out well!
My husband often prints work-related documents (some are several pages long) that only require black ink. Likewise, I print many school documents that only require black ink. Having a laser printer means we can quickly print high-quality black and white documents at an affordable price. However, we do routinely print color documents and occasionally we print on different types of paper. We are still able to print these documents because we have the inkjet printer.
Which type of printer does your family have? What do you like and dislike about it? Would you recommend it for other homeschoolers?
